Lake Brownwood is a reservoir on Jim Ned Creek and Pecan Bayou in Brown County, Texas, United States. The reservoir is used for flood control, the municipal water supply, and recreation, and is controlled by the Brown County Water Improvement District. The reservoir is 6,814 acres at an elevation of 1,424.6 feet and is considered eutrophic. [2]
The dam was 10,890 feet (3,320 m) long with a 567-foot (173 m) long service spillway. The lake, with its 194,000-acre-foot (239,000,000 m 3 ) capacity and forty-three miles of shoreline, was the principal municipal water source for the city of Dallas for 31 years.
A water user's association was formed to promote the dam in 1916, and surveying began in 1921. In 1924 the states of Texas and New Mexico agreed to allow construction, and in 1926 President Calvin Coolidge approved the plan. In 1927 the Red Bluff Water Control District was formed to manage the project from seven existing water districts.
