New York State Route 23 (NY 23) is an east–west state highway in the eastern portion of New York in the United States. It extends for 156.15 miles (251.30 km) from an intersection with NY 26 in the Central New York town of Cincinnatus in Cortland County to the Massachusetts state line in the Berkshire Mountains, where it continues east as that state's Route 23.
US 28 was replaced with US 26 when US 26 was extended from Wyoming to the Pacific Ocean in 1952. The portion of US 28 from Ontario to Prineville became US 26. That highway then continued in a northwesterly direction to Portland and Astoria. From Prineville to Eugene, US 28 became US 126, now known as Oregon Route 126 (OR 126).
Shortly afterward, NY 28 meets NY 23. The route turns north, overlapping NY 23 along the four-lane James F. Lettis Highway. The two routes cross the River and enter the Oneonta city limits before separating at I-88 exit 15. NY 23 continues north on the arterial, while NY 28 joins I-88 eastward out of the city. [3]

The highway serves as exit 245 on Interstate 90 (I-90) and US 395 in a diamond interchange, [5] and is the busiest point on the route with an annual average daily traffic of 1,300 vehicles in 2011. [6] North of the interchange, SR 231 splits off and travels north towards Reardan, [7] being 8.97 miles (14.44 km) longer than SR 23. [1]
