[1] Originally the Baden Conservatory of Music, it was elevated to a Hochschule under the direction of Franz Philipp, who led the school from 1924 to 1942.
The Hochschule. Franz Liszt, who spent a great deal of his life in Weimar, encouraged the founding of a school in 1835 for the education of musicians in orchestral instruments. It was his student Carl Müllerhartung who realized Liszt's dream, founding the university on 24 June 1872.
The Institute of Church Music (Kirchenmusikalische Institut) was refounded 1992. The institute has a prominent role in Germany because of Max Reger (1873–1916), Kurt Thomas (1904–1973) and Günther Ramin (1898–1956). It offers programs in church music, chorus conduction and organ.
