A small incremental backup takes 5 mins over Ethernet and 11 mins over WiFi. That's about normal. The only side effect is that currently Time Machine treats this target as a local folder, which means that I have to manually mount the sparsebundle to enable backups.
Here is what I have done: Started up iMac while pressing CMD + R. Selected « Restore from Time Machine » and clicked « Continue ». In the « Restore from Time Machine » window: Clicked « Continue ». In the « Select a Restore Source »: Selected my LaCie external drive from the list and clicked « Unlock ».
Ditto what @Sheepish-Lord and @Weaselboy said: Time Machine setup will reformat the drive to APFS at initial setup, so no need to worry about what to format the drive as. Specifically, there is a Role in APFS for Time Machine volumes, so drive will be reformatted APFS and a volume with Time Machine Role gets created in the new container. D.
If Time Machine backups are on separate disk and all backups (on this disk) can be sacrificed, then simplest way is to just erase the whole disk and do new backup after that. If not then it should be possible to remove all backups per system. They are foldered by names of system in root folder named Backups.backupdb.
Aug 26, 2024. #9. Yes, clear the space and start a new one. From time to time, TM does this and a new one needs to be created from scratch. If you have sensitive data backed up, it's always a good idea to get at least ONE MORE drive in the TM mix as the odds in both getting corrupt at any one time is much lower.
macrumors 6502. I use an external USB-C HDD/SSD Enclosure and I put a Crucial MX500 4TB SSD in it. It is also TRIM compatible and I could activate TRIM on the external drive with the Sensei App. It came out way cheaper than a Samsung T7 drive and it is plenty fast for external backups (Time Machine in my case).
NH. Oct 5, 2023. #1. Anyone else seeing where Time Machine is skipping hourly backups under Sonoma? I had an issue with external drives after updating to Sonoma. That caused me to adjust some external drives, one of them being a TM backup disk. This is an external encrypted 4 TB HDD. I wiped the drive and started Time Machine over fresh.
