Honestly, you could probably get away with flavoring Way of the Long Death as a kind of feral barbarian-lite. The THP you get for killing could be considered a form of bloodlust, the fear could be a terrifying howl or gaze, Mastery of Death is basically a better Relentless Rag
Im actually playing a monk/barbarian right now i affectionally call the meat shield. I took the idea of being a wall of hit points and ran with it to ridiculous lengths. Hill Dwarf for CON and WIS to get multiclass bonusses and the extra hit point per level.
19th Level (Barbarian 10/ Fighter 4/ Ranger 4/ Cleric 1) Primal Knowledge: Take Nature, its a good knowledge skill, honestly though, this choice does not matter at all. Zealous Presence: Once per long rest boost to attack rolls and Saves, the issue being it can only be use once per long rest.
The Barbarian's primal path is Zealot, so he has a revolving door with death. For the purposes of race, we are taking advantage of the revolving door and using the Reincarnate spell liberally. From our Session 0, the character has died and been reincarnated 3 times and is currently a human.
Nevertheless, there is exactly one Barbarian subclass that eventually gets one individual ability that interacts with Intelligence. The first version of the Ancestral Guardian primal path grants at 10th level the ability to grant yourself advantage on intelligence or wisdom checks thrice per long rest as a non-action before rolling.
Indeed. If optimized for AC & durability (IMO a barbarian should be), using Standard Array or Point Buy, a level 1 barb can easily begin with 16 AC before considering a shield, bumping that up to 17 AC with their first ASI. The tortle's natural armor advantage would only be useful very early in the game. Still a fun idea, regardless :)
At 11th level (when a standard barbarian gains greater rage), the Strength bonus increases to +6, and the dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves increases to +3. At 20th level (when a standard barbarian gains mighty rage), the Strength bonus increases to +8, and the dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves increases to +4.
As noted in other answers, the Half Orc is a near perfect fit for Barbarian. Variant Human Barbarian with Resilient (Dexterity) Feat. A build using Point Buy: 15 15 15 8 8 8 Translates to: STR 16 DEX 16(Feat) CON 16 INT 8 WIS 8 CHA 8 . A key advantage to this build is that you get proficiency to Dexterity saves, which is a very common save.
A Barbarian’s ideal AC is 14-17, DEX mod of +2 and CON mod of +2 to +5. This is the build for level 1-19. Reckless is the other huge factor in enticing attack. Level 20 Barbarian becomes unkillable and the reason to hit it is to stop it from destroying things.
If you keep going, you can gain access to higher level Ranger spells and eventually Stalker's Flurry, which has excellent synergy with a character making Reckless GWM attacks rather often. More Barbarian gets you Mindless Rage, which doubles down on getting you better saves since Gloomstalker 7 nets you Wisdom saves.
