"Ants Marching" is a song by American rock group Dave Matthews Band. It was released in September 1995 as the second single from their debut studio album Under the Table and Dreaming . It reached #18 on the Billboard Alternative chart and on the Mainstream Rock chart as well.
Irish-American bandleader Patrick Gilmore wrote the lyrics to "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" during the American Civil War. Its first publication was deposited in the Library of Congress on September 26, 1863, with words and music credited to "Louis Lambert"; copyright was retained by the publisher, Henry Tolman & Co., of Boston. The band originally recorded the song with lyrics, but they were removed from the final album cut. The album's title comes from a lyric of the song "Ants Marching": "[He] remembers being small / playing under the table and dreaming". The album was dedicated to Matthews' older sister Anne, who was killed by her husband in 1994 in a murder–suicide.
