I've got lab grade 1 liter and 2 liter Erlenmeyer flasks and 1 academic grade 5 liter flask. The 2 l flask was 3x times as expensive as the 5 l. Needless to say, the 5 l never sees any use other than on the stir plate. I did crack a 1 l flask once on an electric coil element while boiling some wort. Huge mess.
I bought a Erlenmeyer flask so I did not have to boil the wort in a pot than transfer it to the flask. What, I do is right before it starts to have a aggressive boil, I remove the flask from the heat with gloves, and then only have 3/4 of the flask on the heat, or until it start back to boil but not a rolling boil.
Personally, I place the flask on the scale, measure the amount of water in grams in the flask, and the DME in grams in a SS bowl. Heat the flask on the stove until it's getting pretty warm, pour the water into the bowl and whisk, return it to the flask with stirbar and boil.
The Wal-Mart flower vase is a great idea in a pinch. I found one a few years ago for maybe 5 bucks. It had a wide mouth that I had to cover with foil, but it was probably 3-4 liters with a flat bottom. Worked great 'till I got a flask.
An Erlenmeyer or Conical Flask can be made of various materials. From what I've read the Erlenmeyer flasks most people use are thin and they break if one is not very careful. (I mean even bumping it or setting it down not roughly but not very gently, obviously not dropping it) 1) It seems the Pyrex costs a lot more than the non Pyrex - Is it ...
I'd like to use my Erlenmeyer flask on my induction cooktop but the induction cooktop will only work with magnetic metals. I've contemplated using a cast iron skillet and putting the flask on that, but I'm scared that the extremely hot cast iron skillet will end up breaking the glass. I know...
Erlenmeyer flasks are widely used in microbiology because the opening is smaller and therefore reduces the likelihood of bacteria from the air falling into the flask when it's open. A wide mouthed beaker will slightly increase your risk of infection because of this.
I started with a 4L flask. I don't know how the heck I would have made a 2L work. For 10g batches, I grow a lot of yeast (4L, decant, 4 more). Also, if you boil in the flask, you'll want a large one to avoid boilovers.
This is an incredibly useful product and is in my view indispensable if making starters in an erlenmeyer flask. One drop weighs approximately 0.05g of which only a portion is dimethylpolysiloxane. 6. Heat the starter wort Heat the wort while occasionally swirling the flask to completely mix the DME and water. 7.
