I cant stand Trent Reznor as a lyricist, with his use of "fuck" and "shit" as filler in his lyrics as far into his career as Hesitation Marks, but as a forward-thinking sound engineer, with Atticus Ross handling the classically trained portion of the process, they are a force to be reckoned with.
Trent Reznor is so cool that it’s virtually unbelievable. Dude went from prancing around in tiny leather shorts as a drug addled 90’s rock star to kicking out classic score after classic score for hollywoods top directors whilst raising a family and doing GQ spreads. The fucking man.
Seems like they had some meaningful conversations about addiction around this time, even when Trent was a total mess (vague story about Trent vomiting on Bowie's rug). Also in that long period between the Fragile and With Teeth, Bowie contributed a couple nice pieces on Trent for Rolling Stone Best Of lists.
I met him on the 2009 NINJA tour. My then girlfriend at the time was very active on Twitter, and had made a "Shakespeare Reznor" meme of sorts. Reznor took notice, sent her 2 backstage passes, and said, "you earned it" on the post. By the time we were at the show (Starlight Theatre in KS), our nerves were through the roof.
People like Art Alexakis from Everclear who were attending the VMA were commenting how they were excited to see Nine Inch Nails perform. I remember reading how they rehearsed We're in This Together for the show but Trent just didn't like how it sounded live so they pivoted and went with The Fragile. Good times.
Michael Trent Reznor was born in Mercer, Pennsylvania halfway between Pittsburgh and Cleveland to Michael J. Reznor and Nancy Clark. Reznor was called by his middle name to avoid confusion with his father. After his parents divorced, Trent lived with his grandparents and his sister Tera lived with their mother.
"The funniest part is because he used actual lyrics from NIN songs in the chorus, Trent had to approve the song and is credited as a co-writer. Which means he gets royalties every time the song is played or someone buys the album!" Gosh, isn't Reznor the troll of trolls! It's impossible not to like this guy :)
Nearly a decade after their first victory, Trent Reznor is an Oscar winner once again. Alongside Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste, Reznor took home an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the movie Soul. The duo of Ross and Reznor composed the score for the film while Batiste contributed original jazz songs for the movie.
Trent also said that The Perfect Drug is one of his least favorites - personally I felt like it was a banger and loved he remixes and played them often when they came out.
This isn’t unusual however, as Corgan rarely explains his lyrics and tries to stay away from tabloid fame. According to Love, the song is about her and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Love claims that Corgan, Love’s ex-boyfriend, was angry when he found out Reznor and Love were in a relationship and this song is the product of that distress.
