Dec 22, 2022. #10. It is a British contract 2-band, made in Birmingham (proof marks & 'Tower') and built and bored as a .58 (x 24 x 24 x = 24-Bore) so most likely to be a Union issue rifle. There may well be makers' name stamps under the barrel, in the barrel or ramrod recess and on the inside of the lockplate.
Another possibility is that Naval stations hired civilian bands when they needed a band. I do believe that after the Civil War the US Navy probably had a band and a band uniform. Here is a cigarettes card from the 1880s-90s that show the Navy band uniform. I am not sure when the Navy added a band and not even sure they did, so perhaps this ...
Jul 18, 2012. #1. The Civil War produced a number of romantic figures and Jeb Stuart was no exception. His exploits are well-documented in numerous biographies about the man. Jeb's concerns did not always center around military and tactical matters, though. Stuart had time to engage in more relaxing and enjoyable activities such as music.
Dec 27, 2013. #3. Glen, the 3-band Pedersoli uses three-groove 1:78 twist rifling, as did the original, although not progressive depth. The 2-Band uses the five-groove 1:48 of that original, again, not progressive depth. The 2-band is the better choice for target work out to 600 yards, but was much less common than the 3-band in the recent ...
The band was formed by musician Steven Wilson in 1987, and began essentially as a solo project for Wilson, who created all of the music. By December 1993, Wilson desired to work in a band environment, and so brought on frequent collaborators. The band, on hiatus since 2010, returns in 2022 with new album CLOSURE/CONTINUATION.
The PH is the mark of Potts & Hunt, London gunmakers, in which Barnett most likely was invested. The "Barnett / London" is a correct period mark. Caleb Huse, the CS buying agent bought from them, as did Colt {for his own speculation} who purchased 3080 Pattern 53 and 1940 Pattern 1858 "Bar-on-Band" rifles.
Texas. Feb 2, 2021. #5. This is an original shortened P1853 Rifle-Musket based on the position of the rear sight. It has been neatly shortened into rifle length with a presumably 33 inch barreled rifle. It is possible that this is a war time alteration.
Before the Civil War many cities had local bands. Usually these local bands wore uniforms. How can one tell if a uniform in a period image is a militia uniform or a band uniform? Some militia regiments or companies had their own bands and, sometimes but not always, the unit band wore a uniform associated with their regiment or company.
In December 1861, The Union War Department wanted to eliminate bands to save money. This was not popular. So instead, Federal musicians were reorganized in July, 1862. They were consolidated into brigade-band organizations. It is said there were at least 500 bands and 9000 bandsmen who served in Union Army.
Sep 5, 2011. #1. I have always heard that the shorter, '2-band' version of the Enfield was a later introduction, and not used during the ACW. But, reading Irish Green and Union Blue (Lawr. F. Kohl, ed, 1986), letters of Color Sgt. Peter Walsh of the 28th MVI (Irish Brigade)he states that at one point the entire Color Guard was re-armed with ...
