The woodland jumping mouse is a medium-sized rodent. The species is darker in the south. [4][6] The mouse has adaptations to live in cold climate. [4] The mouse has small, high-crowned skull. Three molariform teeth are present, premolars are absent, and grooved incisors are orange or yellow.
The long-tailed mouse breeds seasonally from September through June [11] Gestation generally lasts approximately 31–33 days, with an average litter of 3 young. [4] Young become fully independent 33 days after birth and reach adult size at approximately 40 days. [4] The tail will continue to grow until they are approximately 75 days old. [11]

Three species of Old World rats and mice occur in California. House mouse, Mus musculus (introduced) Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus (introduced) Black rat, Rattus rattus (introduced) Order: Rodentia Family: Dipodidae. The tail of a jerboa can be longer than its head and body, and a white cluster of hair is commonly seen at the end of the tail. Jerboas use their tails to balance when hopping, and as a prop when sitting upright. Jerboa fur is fine, and usually the colour of sand. This colour usually matches the jerboa habitat (an example of cryptic colouration).
