The Bendigo line is a regional passenger rail service operated by V/Line in Victoria, Australia. It serves 14 stations towards its terminus in the regional city of Bendigo . It is the third most-used regional rail service in Victoria (behind the Ballarat and Geelong services), carrying 2.06 million passengers in the 2022-23 financial year .
It is served by V/Line Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill line trains. All services to Southern Cross depart from Platform 1, while most services towards and beyond Bendigo depart from Platform 2, although some peak-hour services using Platform 1 instead. Bendigo is a ground level premium station, featuring two side platforms. It opened on 21 October 1862, with the current station provided in 1965. Initially opened as Sandhurst, the station was given its current name of Bendigo on 1 September 1891. [1] The disused station at Golden Square is located between Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat.
Diggers Rest opened on 2 October 1859, eight months after the railway line from Sunshine was extended to Sunbury. [4] Like the suburb itself, the station was named after the fact that the area was used as a resting place for prospectors travelling to Bendigo during the Victorian gold rush.
It serves the north-western Bendigo suburb of Eaglehawk, and it opened on 19 September 1876. [1] A pedestrian subway once existed at the up end of the station, until it was filled in and replaced with a pedestrian crossing in 1967. [1] The Eaglehawk–Kerang electric staff section was replaced with staff and ticket in 1987. [2]
During the morning peak, trains to Melbourne depart from Platform 2, and trains to Bendigo depart from Platform 1. That is reversed after 8:30am, to allow trains travelling in the "peak" direction to use the one 160 km/h track, upgraded in 2006 as part of the Regional Fast Rail project .
