To attend seminars in the United States, a student must be chosen by their high school out of all students in that school's sophomore class. At the seminars, students participate in programs designed to enhance their leadership and teamwork skills, such as participating in volunteer activities or doing group games and puzzles.
Seminar Studies in History is a book series for undergraduate and younger students that aims to bridge the gap between the monograph and the full size university textbook. The series was established in 1968 by history teacher Patrick Richardson, and was one of the first series of academic history books to include documentary sources as standard.
Most first-year seminars are a semester long and start at student orientation. From orientation, students enroll in the course, which gives them a variety of college experiences, from tours of the campus to a breakdown of how to study for tests. Many schools even offer students help with purchasing books from the school's bookstore.
In 2003, J Weekly, a Northern California Jewish news blog, highlighted the book's adoption in a Santa Rosa, California high school. After a parent complained about anti-Israel bias, the Jewish Community Relations Council reported on the problems in the book, then sent it to Alan Dershowitz , who concurred.
Through an application process, 90 to 100 Seminar Leaders (SLs) are selected to lead week-long seminars in either Beijing, Shanghai, or Hangzhou, and are aided by a Teaching Assistant, a Chinese college student who undergoes an application process. Each high school participant can explore a total of six seminar topics.
