Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center is a 617-bed acute care hospital located on Woodland Street in Hartford, Connecticut. The hospital was established in 1897 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry. [2] With 617 beds and 65 bassinets, it is the largest Catholic hospital in New England. [3]
The hospital replaced St. Francis Hospital, also known as Starling Medical College. The hospital was designed by R. A. Sheldon of New York, with assistance from George Bellows Sr. [3] Grant Medical Center operated a 16-story building, Baldwin Tower, from 1968 to its demolition in 2004. [4]

In August 1970, the Sisters of St. Francis began the construction of a new eight-story building to be the core of the new St. Francis Hospital Center. Encompassing more than 320,000 square feet (30,000 m 2), the capacity of the hospital was increased to 500 beds. The total cost was in excess of 14 million dollars.
