Turtletown's borders, however, in the eyes of some are disputed. According to one, parts of it are known as Dogtown, which appears on a few local maps. However, to others, it is simply all Turtletown and Dogtown does not exist. [4] The only known map that contains this is the USGS map of the area, and a U.S. Forest Service map.

The course was founded in 1911 by 300 Oklahoma City residents. The course, designed by architect Perry Maxwell, measures 6,861 yards from the championship tees and plays to a par 71 with a course rating of 73.5 and a slope of 130. The course features tree-lined fairways throughout the rolling hills.

The tournament first played in the 1920s under the name Oklahoma City Open. After a hiatus of nearly three decades, the PGA Tour returned to Oklahoma City in the 1950s. The 1962–1967 events were held at Quail Creek Golf & Country Club .
