The first temple was founded in 645 AD, which makes it the oldest-established temple in Tokyo. The vatadage is considered to be one of ancient Sri Lanka's most prolific architectural creations; this design represented a changing perspective of stupa design independently within the island. [6] Early provincial vatadages have been in the form of a square [ 6 ] later it developed into a circular form enclosing the dagoba. [ 2 ]
