Litmus, used by alchemists in the Middle Ages and still readily available, is a naturally occurring pH indicator made from a mixture of lichen species, particularly Roccella tinctoria. The word litmus is literally from 'colored moss' in Old Norse (see Litr). The color changes between red in acid solutions and blue in alkalis.
Rumours of the origin of urine indicator-dye go back at least as far as 1958, [1] and the story is commonly told to children by parents who do not want them to urinate in the pool. [3] A 1985 biography of Orson Welles describes him using such a dye as part of a prank in 1937.
The equipment required is a colorimeter, some cuvettes and a suitable color reagent. The process may be automated, e.g. by the use of an AutoAnalyzer or by flow injection analysis . Recently, colorimetric analyses developed for colorimeters have been adapted for use with plate readers to speed up analysis and reduce the waste stream.
