In October 2005, the former CCNY Engineering School became the Grove School of Engineering after Andrew Grove, an alumnus of the school and co-founder of the Intel Corporation, made the largest single donation that the CCNY had ever received. Grove’s donation of $26 million was used to fund research and equipment.
The school was fashioned as "a Free Academy for the purpose of extending the benefits of education gratuitously to persons who have been pupils in the common schools of the … city and county of New York". [10] The Free Academy later became the City College of New York, the oldest institution among the CUNY colleges. [11]

Colin Powell, who graduated from the City College of New York in 1958, established the Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies in 1997. Its original mission was to provide a base for the study of social and economic forces and conditions that impact New York City, by encouraging students and faculty to engage and partner with community organizations.
