The main party of three-party coalition, Alliance of Change for Progress (AMP), National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction, led by independence hero Xanana Gusmao, was in power from 2007–17, but leader of Fretilin Mari Alkatiri formed a coalition government after July 2017 parliamentary election.
Xanana Gusmão spent four years at the seminary. [6] Most of the Fretilin guerillas were educated at the seminary, including Jose Ramos Horta. [7] Until independence the medium of instruction was Indonesian. [5] In July 2000 the seminary was the venue for the marriage of Timor-Leste President Xanana Gusmão and Kirsty Sword. [8]
Presidential elections were held in East Timor for the first time on 14 April 2002 under UN administration.
