In 1949 General Electric began testing the first model of its modified Gatling design, now called the Vulcan Gun. The first prototype was designated the T45 (Model A). It fired .60 in (15 mm) ammunition at about 2,500 rounds per minute from six barrels driven by an electric motor. In 1950, GE delivered ten initial model A T45 guns for evaluation.
The M61 Vulcan is a hydraulically, electrically, or pneumatically driven, six-barrel, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm × 102 mm (0.787 in × 4.016 in) rounds at an extremely high rate (typically 6,000 rounds per minute).
All models of Gatling guns were declared obsolete by the U.S. military in 1911, after 45 years of service. [20] The original Gatling gun was a field weapon that used multiple rotating barrels turned by a hand crank, and firing loose (no links or belt) metal cartridge ammunition using a gravity feed system from a hopper. [78] [79] The Gatling gun operated by a hand-crank mechanism, with six barrels revolving around a central shaft (although some models had as many as ten). Each barrel fires once per revolution at about the same 4 o ...
The first successful self-loader was the Gatling gun, a hand-cranked revolver. It was invented by Richard Jordan Gatling and fielded by the Union forces during the American Civil War. Self-loaders use energy to reload. The world's first machine gun was the Maxim gun, developed by British inventor Sir Hiram Maxim in 1884.

The Magnum Research BFR is a heavier gun at approximately 4.5 pounds (2.0 kg), helping it have much more manageable recoil. [ 25 ] Only with the recent introduction of large caliber revolver cartridges, such as the .460 S&W Magnum and the .500 S&W Magnum , have production handguns begun to eclipse the .45-70 Contender in the field of big-game ...
