Craigavon (/ k r eɪ ˈ ɡ æ v ən / kray-GAV-ən; Irish: Creag Abhann [4]) is a town in northern County Armagh, Northern Ireland.Its construction began in 1965 and it was named after the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland: James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon.
The district was created as Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon on 1 April 2015 by merging the City and District of Armagh, Banbridge District and most of the Borough of Craigavon. The word "City" was added to the name on 24 February 2016, [3] to reflect Armagh's city status. The local authority is Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
Armagh Market House was built in 1815 as a two-storey five-bay building, and is currently used as a library. Armagh County Museum is the oldest county museum in Ireland. [36] The building dates from 1833 and was originally a school house. It was opened as the County Museum in 1937.
The county was administered by Armagh County Council from 1899 until the abolition of county councils in Northern Ireland in 1973. [ 21 ] County Armagh remains officially used for purposes such as a Lieutenancy area – the county retains a lord lieutenant who acts as representative of the British Monarch in the county.

Lurgan was placed under the jurisdiction of Craigavon Borough Council, and remained so until a new act streamlined and merged the various districts in 2015.
