The large, showy honey-scented flowers [6] are yellow to orange colored, 5–15 cm wide and 10–30 cm long. [7] Flowering occurs in spring, though more profusely during autumn and early winter. [8] Its seeds are spread through way of wind, water, and animals. [9] The seeds are achenes, 4-angled, and 5mm long. [10]
The flowers are white or crimson in color, born in small, rounded bunches (umbels) near the surface of the soil. [2] Each flower is partly enclosed in two green bracts. The hermaphrodite flowers are minute in size, less than 3 mm (0.12 in), with five to six corolla lobes per flower. Each flower bears five stamens and two styles.
Today, the species also occurs in southern India, Sri Lanka, virtually all of Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and northern and eastern Australia, but this is probably the result of human translocations. [5] It has a very long history (c. 3,000 years) of being cultivated for its edible seeds [5] and is commonly cultivated in water gardens. [4]
