Saint James School is an independent boarding and day school in the U.S. state of Maryland.Founded in 1842 as the College and Grammar School of St. James's, the school is a coeducational college preparatory school and the oldest Episcopal boarding school in the United States founded as a boarding school proper.
James Episcopal Day School, founded in 1948 as a kindergarten by Doris deBessonet, provides a church-based education to children 18 months old through 5th. Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge was established by St. James in 1965 as a diocesan owned extension of the Day School for middle and high school students.
In September 1968, the parish opened St. James’ Episcopal School, to provide elementary education for families in the parish neighborhood. Over the years, the school expanded to a K-6 school to include also Kindergarten classes. In 1981, the school moved to its current location on St. Andrews Place, directly north of the church. Schools include St. James' Episcopal School, an elementary school which opened in 1968. It has 344 students on roll of varying economic, ethnic, racial and social backgrounds. Josh Groban is a notable former student.
The church began informally in 1890 as St. Andrews Mission, with support from All Saints Episcopal Church in nearby Pasadena. [2] In 1905, a temporary structure was built on the corner of Monterey Road and Fremont Avenue, where the current church would be later built.
At that time services were held year round and an official Altar Guild was organized. In 1955 Father Rutter started the St. James Parish Day School with six students in the first kindergarten class and later added a parish house with several class rooms on the north side of the church. Father Rutter retired in 1957.
