A bluecoat school is a type of charity school in England, the first of which was founded in the 16th century. Most of them have closed; some remain open as schools, often on different sites, and some of the original buildings have been adapted for other purposes.
Built in 1716–17 as a charity school, Bluecoat Chambers in School Lane is the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool, England. [1] Following the Liverpool Blue Coat School 's move to another site in 1906, the building was rented from 1907 onwards by the Sandon Studios Society. [ 2 ]
Bluecoat Chambers: School Lane 1717 Bluecoat Chambers is today an art gallery and the original home of the Blue Coat School founded by Bryan Blundell. The building forms a U-shape with a five-bay central portion rising two storeys and the 11-bay wings being three storeys tall.

A bluecoat school was founded in Walsall towards the end of the 17th century, to provide children of poor families with an education free of charge. The school had (and still has) strong connections to St Matthews Church in Walsall, [2] where private contributors and collections funded the school in the early days.
