Referred to as both Bodkin and On Record, [3] the seven-episode series is created by Jez Scharf as Higher Ground's first scripted series at Netflix, in collaboration with wiip. Scharf and Alex Metcalf serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series with Tonia Davis for Higher Ground, David Flynn and Paul Lee for wiip, and Nne Ebong.
On August 19, 2019, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of eight episodes. The series was created by Stacy Rukeyser who was also expected to executive produce alongside J. Miles Dale. [3] On September 27, 2021, Netflix renewed the series for a second season. [5]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 69% of 13 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.3/10. The website's consensus reads: "The Liberator ' s eccentric animation gives it some creative gloss, but clichéd storytelling and stock characters keep this World War II tale from being wholly salute-worthy."
