The Early Days: Deep Purple's early output ranged from energetic rock (such as their cover of Joe South's "Hush", which became an iconic radio hit that climbed to #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart) to strongly classically influenced pieces (such as "April", a fan-loved gem from their third album).
Hush is from an earlier lineup with Nick Simper on bass. Simper used a P-bass with flatwounds live, in his case a 1961 Fiesta Red one... But on the recording I hear a distinct Gibson Mudbucker sound, with a very thick, warm low-end, and hardly any treble in it (a P-bass has WAY more midrange, which cuts through the mix).
"Kung Fu Fighting" - Carl Douglas (1974) Captured in only two takes spanning 10 minutes and originally intended as a B-side, this paean to the martial arts would top the charts in no less than 12 countries, sell over 11 million records worldwide, and help lay the groundwork for disco's explosion.
