Lake George is a lake in Hammond, Indiana, in the United States. Lake George is in the far northwest corner of Indiana, part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It sits between Wolf Lake to the west and Lake Michigan to the east. Lake George has a north and south basin divided by the Lake George Trail, a 3.1-mile (5.0 km) greenway.
The hotel was named after "the Sagamore", an American Indian character in the James Fenimore Cooper novel The Last of the Mohicans (1826). Several of Lake George's nearby islands are also named after characters from the book. [citation needed] Twice damaged by fire, in 1893 and 1914, the Sagamore was rebuilt in early 1921.
Since 1913, on the East Shore of Lake George, YMCA Camp Chingachgook has hosted thousands of guests every summer. The first private owner of the lake front property ran the United States Hotel on the site until F. G. Crosby bought the land and building in 1848. Financial difficulties caused him to lease the structure to the Lake George Young Ladies Institute in 1855 but it was shut down after only one year of operation.
The lake is home to many species of fish, which were stocked by former deputy game warden and director of the Lake George Cottager's Association, Fred Wiegman in the early 20th century. Early in its history, the Lake George Cottager's Association obtained permission for fishing in the lake using either Michigan or Indiana fishing licenses. [ 4 ]
