Much of Highway 2 is a core route in the National Highway System of Canada: between Fort Macleod and Edmonton and between Donnelly and Grimshaw. Highway 14 begins in south Edmonton as a freeway named Whitemud Drive at the Calgary Trail / Gateway Boulevard interchange, linking to Highway 2. On January 1, 2019, the City of Edmonton officially annexed 8,260 ha (82.6 km 2; 31.9 sq mi) from Leduc County and the City of Beaumont, increasing the city's area to 767.85 km 2 (296.47 sq mi), with discussions of annexing an additional 2,830 ha (28.3 km 2; 10.9 sq mi) of Edmonton International Airport land still ongoing.
