The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is a major, 1,215 bed, tertiary NHS and military hospital in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, situated very close to the University of Birmingham. The hospital, which cost £545 million to construct, opened on 16 June 2010, replacing the previous Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital .
The Trust had been forced to fully re-open the former Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which was supposed to be closed after the new site was opened in 2010. The government encouraged and approved the establishment of a 65-bed cancer unit at the QE in 1945. In 1948 the hospital became part of the Birmingham United Hospital Group under the National Health Service. [5] In 1960, the first heart pacemaker in Britain was at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. [2]
The Ontario government purchased the hospital in 1994. [6] In 1997, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Hillcrest Hospital were merged as the Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto. The following year, this organization was amalgamated with the Toronto Rehabilitation Centre and Lyndhurst Hospital as the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. [4] [7]
The hospital became part of the new National Health Service in 1948. [10] Until 1964 the hospital was a training centre for nurses, who, on qualification, became members of the General Hospital Birmingham Nurses League. [11] After 1964, training switched to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the nearby suburb of Edgbaston. [11]
The trust, with Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust was jointly procuring an electronic patient record system in a contract worth £10m – £40m in December 2013.
