Just got a hog island SW16 skiff with a 40 hp tohatsu prop. Quite a lot of porpoising even with 150 lbs of ballast in the bow, which is a known thing it seems. It sounds like a hydrofoil on the outboard solves this for many (there’s really no way to add trim tabs). Anyone have recommendations...
Either way it has to be near flat calm to achieve. Cruise at 3600rpm gets me 26-28 mph. That’s also the best speed for the chop. it’s great to handle and from 2019 to 2021 we also had a 24ft center console, and my kids mostly used the skiff. We got out of the center console because we missed the skiff, I think the kids are still pissed lol.
looking for conversations with other Johnsen skiff owners... here are a few pictures of my 1985 14'9" Johnsen skiff (made by Whites MFG right here in Florida), 2020 Yamaha 25 hp 4 stroke and a Bob's "mini versa jack" jack plate. been at it for a few years now. love the boat. want to hear stories of other Johnsen skiff's.
The Reef Wrasse 14’ & 16’ skiffs will be the lightest shallowest true technical flats skiffs available today for the home builder. These skiffs are designed to be able to carry all your fly rods in conventional rod racks under the side decks like a true flats skiff. These are not sit on top of a cooler on a Paddle board type of craft.
MORELLI BOATWORKS here to introduce our newly designed, tested one of a kind cat skiff! What makes the M18 one of a kind is our very untraditional, full catamaran, dual stepped, wide tunnel bottom paired with a very traditional skiff top. The Morelli M18 has a length of 18.6' and a overall beam of 84''.
3° deadrise on it and the chines are pretty minimal. Has a decent amount of slide WOT as most do but it rips on rail if trimmed properly. Poling character so far is really incredible, completely silent with very little pressure disturbance. Can honestly say until you hit high winds it poles like a much much lighter skiff

The H:Skiff is the ultimate boat for water explorers looking for the next step up from a kayak, or the perfect smaller boat to get up onto the flats or further into the mangroves. This boat is light, easy to tow, launches from anywhere, a breeze to clean and maintain, and fits in your garage.
Drake #1, HB #2, Guide #3. Drake for so many reasons (below). Only reason I would do the HB is if you plan to load the skiff with a TM, two people, cooler, etc.-Radius transom - is turns on a dime, is quite, makes it faster.-Dry storage is amazing-Build quality is better than HB and way better than EC. EC is trash in my opinion
The goal is to build a bare bones skiff that weighs less than 125#. Open bulkheads, no electrical, no fuel lines, no trim tabs and no moving parts other than a small outboard or a transom mounted TM. Only hardware will be transom/bow eyelets, oarlocks, a single static cleat up front and an aluminum transom sleeve. No cap.
