Dhaka Bypass Expressway is a 48 km (30 mi) under construction controlled-access highway located in the division of Dhaka in Bangladesh. The project constitutes a segment of the Asian Highway network. Its principal objective is to alleviate heavy traffic congestion on access roads and highways passing through the city of Dhaka. [1]
The stipulated time to complete the project was 2008. But it may take more time as only 25 per cent work had so far been completed. According to the project map, there will be 10 bridges, but no tender to this effect was floated. Only 15 kilometer roads inside the project have been completed out of 140 kilometers in the sectors 1, 4, 5, 11, and 17.
The project did not start as of 2011 because the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare did not proceed with the project. [5] Toma construction delayed the construction of a culvert in Hatirjheel project by three months after they subcontracted the project in 2011. They had received the contract from Bangladesh Railway. In January 2010, construction work to expand the Dhaka–Chittagong stretch from two to four lanes commenced. [8] The project was expected to decrease travel time from Dhaka to Chittagong to 4.5 or 5 hours. [3] As of March 2013, only 23.5 per cent of work has been completed, and it was unlikely to meet its December 2013 deadline.
The project is being executed in three phases. [1] Phase one spans from Kawla near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Banani Railway Station, phase two stretches from Banani Railway Station to Moghbazar railway crossing, and phase three extends from Moghbazar rail crossing to Kutubkhali on the Dhaka–Chittagong highway.
