The Metro Early College High School is a semi-public, non-charter privately funded high school located in Columbus, Ohio; on the campus of Ohio State University. It is also a part of the Metro Schools, along with the Metro Middle School. The Metro Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) was another branch of the school, but was closed in 2017.
The school was founded in 1923 by Bishop James J. Hartley as a high school and college seminary for the education of Catholic priests for the service of the Diocese of Columbus. The first classes, consisting of 27 boys, were held at Sacred Heart School, an all-girls Catholic school, while the main school building was being built from 1923 to 1925.
The Center and its multiple nonprofit subtenants provide services including workforce development and job training, early learning preschool and child care, after-school and summer programming for school-aged children, a variety of social services, and a cafe which serves weekday lunches and Tuesday evening dinner.
A 2007 study by U.S. News & World Report ranked the high school branch of Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center amongst the top high schools in the United States. Founded as Columbus Area Technician's School in 1963, it was renamed Columbus Technical Institute in 1965 and was renamed again to its current name in 1987. The college has grown from an initial enrollment of 67 students in 1963, to its current enrollment of over 27,000 students over two campuses, nine regional learning centers, and online courses.
