"Time and Tide" was released as the sixth and final single from Basia's debut album, also titled Time and Tide. It was a chart success in the USA where it became her first Top 40 hit on Billboard ' s Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts. Despite being Basia's biggest U.S. pop hit, the song was never remixed. Six songs were released as singles to promote the record, with "Promises", "New Day for You", and the album's title track being the most successful. All three tracks achieved success on the U.S. adult contemporary chart and the latter was also Basia's first song to break the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 .
The lyrics of the song were based on a poem that Ross had written for Basia's birthday, which she then incorporated into the track. [1] The song was particularly popular in Japan where it was used in an advert for a chain of department stores Parco.
