Hvaldimir’s Story. The whale in the video is an individual known as Hvaldimir, a male beluga who has been seen regularly off the northern coast of Norway since April 2019. His name is a portmanteau of ‘hval’, the Norwegian word for ‘whale’, and the Russian name Vladimir.

Well, they’re a naturally social animal. They live in family groups. They don’t have a whole lot of predation to worry about - the occasional polar bear or orca or Inuit. They don’t really hunt too much, mostly shellfish and some bony fish. So they just don’t have a whole lot to fear and they don’t really need to be fearsome.
