Alfred was a son of Æthelwulf, king of Wessex, and his wife Osburh. [5] According to his biographer, Asser, writing in 893, "In the year of our Lord's Incarnation 849 Alfred, King of the Anglo-Saxons", was born at the royal estate called Wantage, in the district known as Berkshire [a] ("which is so called from Berroc Wood, where the box tree grows very abundantly").
892–893: Uhtred of Bebbanburg is now the preeminent warlord of Wessex, Alfred the Great's kingdom. Alfred, always in poor health and now fearing he is dying, pressures him to swear an oath to Alfred's son and presumptive heir, Edward.

When Wessex is overrun and Alfred is at his lowest point, hiding with a few followers in a marsh, Uhtred encounters him by chance, helps organize his slowly gathering army and plays a vital role in the crucial Battle of Ethandun, which saves Wessex from destruction.
The Witan summons Uhtred to an audience with King Alfred in Cippanhamm, where he is accused, based on the testimony of Asser, of using the king's ship to raid the Britons, with whom Wessex is at peace, and joining Svein in attacking the Cynuit abbey. Steapa Snotor, one of Odda the Younger's warriors, says he too saw Uhtred at the abbey.
Alfred, King of Wessex, has Uhtred of Bebbanburg build one of the fortified towns that make up Alfred's system of defence. After ambushing a band of raiders, Uhtred learns that two powerful Norse earls, Sigefrid and Erik Thurgilson, allied with Uhtred's treacherous former friend Haesten, have occupied nearby Lundene.
