The company was founded by William Elvis Sloan in Chicago, Illinois in 1906 with the introduction of the Royal flushometer, a valve to release a measured amount of water to flush a urinal or toilet. Initial sales were very poor: only a single Royal model flushometer was sold in 1906, and two in 1907.
He married Bertha Moore (1874-?) in 1898 in Chicago, Illinois, and they had a child, Edith Marie Sloan (1913-?). In 1906, he founded Sloan Valve Company, which is now headquartered in Franklin Park, Illinois. [2] He died on June 25, 1961, at the age of 93 in Chicago, Illinois, and was buried in Oak Park, Illinois. [3]

The topmost pressure chamber slowly refills through its narrow passageway, pushing the valve cylinder back down gradually.
