Crito (/ ˈ k r aɪ t oʊ / KRY-toh or / ˈ k r iː t oʊ / KREE-toh; Ancient Greek: Κρίτων) is a dialogue written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.It depicts a conversation between Socrates and his wealthy friend Crito of Alopece regarding justice (δικαιοσύνη), injustice (ἀδικία), and the appropriate response to injustice.
Crito grew up in the Athenian deme of Alopece alongside Socrates and was of roughly the same age as the philosopher, [1] placing his year of birth around 469 BC. [2] Plato's Euthydemus and Xenophon's Memorabilia both present him as a wealthy businessman [3] who made his money from agriculture, [4] [5] which scholars speculate was conducted in Alopece itself.
