John 21 is the twenty-first and final chapter of the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. It contains an account of a post-crucifixion appearance in Galilee , which the text describes as the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples.
Jesus then describes Peter's future to him, and says "someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go" (John 21:18, NIV). The narrator interprets this as referring to Peter's martyrdom (John 21:19). According to a tradition found in the apocryphal Acts of Peter, Peter was crucified upside-down.
(The Good News Bible, as a footnote, gave this as: "At every Passover Festival Pilate had to set free one prisoner for them.") Reasons: The same verse or a very similar verse appears (and is preserved) as Matthew 27:15 and as Mark 15:6. This verse is suspected of having been assimilated into Luke at a very early date.
The chapter is seemingly the conclusion to the Gospel of John, but it is followed by an apparently "supplementary" chapter, John 21. [1] Some biblical scholars suggest that John 20 was the original conclusion of the Gospel, and John 21 was a later addition, but there is no conclusive manuscript evidence for this theory.
