SOHC design (for a 1973 Triumph Dolomite Sprint) . The oldest configuration of overhead camshaft engine is the single overhead camshaft (SOHC) design. [1] A SOHC engine has one camshaft per bank of cylinders, therefore a straight engine has a total of one camshaft and a V engine or flat engine has a total of two camshafts (one for each cylinder bank).

The valvetrain layout is defined according to the number of camshafts per cylinder bank. Therefore, a V6 engine with a total of four camshafts - two camshafts per cylinder bank - is usually referred to as a double overhead camshaft engine (although colloquially they are sometimes referred to as "quad-cam" engines). The M110 engine family is a DOHC (double overhead cam) crossflow cylinder head design with 2 valves per cylinder straight-6 automobile engine made by Mercedes-Benz in the 1970s and 1980s. The M110.92x and .93x engines are carburetor engines, with Solex 4A1 carburetor.
The first picture is a double overhead camshaft cylinder head. Those are hydraulic tappets, in place of the more common shim and bucket. Those are in fact cam lobes. An engine with over head cams and a rocker shaft does not have tappets on the valve springs. An overhead cam can have almost as many parts. The minimum missing is pushrods.
The dual overhead cam (DOHC) inline four-cylinder engine had 2.4 L; 144.0 cu in (2,360 cc) of displacement with a bore and a stroke of 3.46 in × 3.82 in (88 mm × 97 mm). [3] A 285 hp (213 kW) turbocharged variant of this engine was used in the high-performance SRT-4 version of the Caliber. Applications: 2007–2010 Chrysler Sebring
