Kairat was the leading Kazakh club during the Soviet period and the only representative of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in the Soviet Top League. FC Okzhetpes (relegated after two years in the top flight) was relegated at the end of the 2020 season, whilst FC Irtysh Pavlodar withdrew from the league in May 2020, and as a result also dropped down into the Kazakhstan First Division. They were replaced by FC Aktobe and FC Atyrau after they had spent one season in the Kazakhstan First Division.
Akzhayik, Turan (both relegated after 2 seasons in top flight) and Taraz (relegated after 4 seasons in top flight) were all relegated at the end of the 2022 season. They were replaced by Okzhetpes (promoted after a 2 seasons absence), Kaisar and Zhetysu (both clubs promoted after a single season absence) from the Kazakhstan First League.
The 2020 FC Kairat season is the 10th successive season that the club will play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan, since their promotion back to the top flight in 2009. Kairat will also play in the Kazakhstan Cup and the Europa League.
