[citation needed] The tree is native to hills and mountains below 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) altitude, in China (Hainan, Yunnan), India, Laos, Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. [1] The berry-sized fruit is also has local Indian names like Chunna and Churna.
Fruits. It is a large, deciduous, extensively-spreading, climbing vine with several elongated twining branches. Leaves are simple, alternate, and exstipulate with long petioles up to 15 cm (6 in) long which are roundish and pulvinate, both at the base and apex with the basal one longer and twisted partially and half way around.
The tree is small to medium in size, reaching 1–8 metres (3 + 1 ⁄ 2 –26 feet) in height. The bark is mottled. The branchlets are finely pubescent (not glabrous), 10–20 centimetres (4–8 inches) long, usually deciduous.
