A hybrid of domestic dog and pampas fox. Crossings between canids of a different genus is extremely rare. In 2021, a female canid with unusual phenotypic characteristics was found in Vacaria City, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. DNA analysis indicates that the canid was a hybrid between a pampas fox and a domestic dog. [33]
These hybrids were small, agile, and trainable, and had excellent noses. The jackal–dog hybrids were bred together for seven generations to establish the breed. The result was an easily trainable dog with a superior sense of smell, called "Sulimov dogs" after their breeder. [citation needed] As described by Sulimov:
Jackals are canids native to Africa and Eurasia. While the word "jackal" has historically been used for many canines of the subtribe canina, in modern use it most commonly refers to three species: the closely related black-backed jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) and side-striped jackal (Lupulella adusta) of Central and Southern Africa, and the golden jackal (Canis aureus) of south-central Europe ...

Dogxim, or Graxorra in Portuguese, was a female canid hybrid between a Pampas fox and a domesticated dog that was discovered in Brazil during 2021. [1] The canid showed a mixture of fox and dog behaviours, [2] and a team of geneticists led by Thales Renato Ochotorena de Freitas and Rafael Kretschmer announced in 2023 that she was a distinct hybrid genetically that "represents the first ...
Within the wolf-like canids is the jackal group, which includes the three jackals: the black-backed jackal (Lupulella mesomela), the side-striped jackal (Lupulella adusta), and the golden jackal (Canis aureus). These three species are approximately the same size, possess similar dental and skeletal morphology, and are identified from each other ...
The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis), [4] also called the red jackal, the Simien jackal or Simien fox, is a canine native to the Ethiopian Highlands. In southeastern Ethiopia, it is also known as the horse jackal. It is similar to the coyote in size and build, and is distinguished by its long and narrow skull, and its red and white fur. [5]
Compared to members of the genus Canis, the black-backed jackal is a very ancient species, and has changed little since the Pleistocene, [6] being the most basal wolf-like canine, alongside the closely related side-striped jackal. [7] It is a fox-like animal [8] with a reddish brown to tan coat and a black saddle that extends from the shoulders ...
