The Prairie Marsh trail is a 0.25 miles (0.40 km) loop trail that passes through two habitats, a tallgrass prairie and a marsh. [4] This area is considered a virgin prairie as it has never been tilled or grazed. Both the prairie and the marsh are dependent upon fire to maintain their openness and diversity of plant life.
The trail that runs through the preserve is about 3 1/2 miles in length and is a loop trail. The trailhead begins in the parking lot for trail No. 10 in Shades State Park.
The Hayes Arboretum is an arboretum of 330 acres (130 ha) located in Richmond, Indiana, United States. [1] The main (west) entrance is open free to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., while the east entrance, which provides access to both hiking and mountain biking trails, is open daily from dawn to dusk.
It is a National Natural Landmark and a State Nature Preserve owned by the City of Evansville and operated by the non-profit Wesselman Nature Society. The preserve consists of over 190 acres (0.77 km 2 ) of virgin bottomland hardwood forest complemented by an additional 50 acres (200,000 m 2 ) of younger forest, field, and pond.
Located in the eastern end of the state park, the 470-acre (190 ha) Pine Hills Nature Preserve protects the deep canyons formed by Indian Creek before it enters Sugar Creek. The primary feature in the preserve is the "Devils Backbone," a 100-foot-high stone ridge barely wide enough for the trail to cross.
