The roots of the MN12 program began in 1984 [2] when Ford sought to build on the success of the then-current, Fox body-based Thunderbird and Cougar. Going beyond unique styling, Ford wanted to produce a Thunderbird and Cougar that could compete with more sophisticated and higher performing cars from European automakers such as BMW .
The Fox platform, like most compact and mid-size cars of the late 1970s, was designed with a rear-wheel drive layout. In contrast to the full-size Fords and Mercurys of the time, the Fox platform used unibody construction. The Fox platform used MacPherson strut front suspension, continuing the use of a live rear axle suspension configuration. [12]

The Mustang's front suspension makes use of MacPherson struts with longer lower control arms, new spindles, anti-roll bars, and other enhancements over 1993 and older Mustangs. At the rear, a four-bar link solid axle was used. [9] The 1994 Mustang's standard rear axle ratio was 2.73:1, though this was later changed to 3.27:1.
The rear suspension employed a new three-link system to locate the axle longitudinally, and a Panhard Rod to locate the axle laterally. [16] This live axle rear suspension, while sacrificing handling, provides the benefits of reduced cost and weight over heavier, more expensive independent rear suspensions. In spite of this, Ford has drawn ...
