Born in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, Nakahara is the music director and conductor at the South Carolina Philharmonic, and resident conductor of the Spokane Symphony. Nakahara received a Master of Music degree in instrumental conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Rodney Winther.

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra began as a small group of volunteer musicians practicing in the Women's college auditorium on the old Furman University campus in 1948. One of the most well-known of the original musicians was Mary Evelyn Gooddy McCrary who played cello, viola, violin, and piano.
