Tri-State Normal College was established in 1884. For more than 120 years its name was derived from and referred to the "tri-state" area because of its location in Indiana with proximity to Michigan and Ohio. In 1906, the school name was shortened to Tri-State College, and in 1975 it became Tri-State University.
Tri-State's first men's social fraternity, Sigma Mu Sigma formed in 1921, and its first women's social sorority, Sigma Alpha Gamma (local) formed in 1926. [1] As of 2018, 26% of male and 19% of female undergraduates are involved in these groups.

The current members of the MIAA include Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin University, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, University of Olivet, Saint Mary's College of Notre Dame, Indiana, and Trine University, formerly known as Tri-State University. Milton W. Schoon (February 25, 1922 – January 18, 2015) was an American professional basketball player.. A 6-foot-7, 230-pound center, Schoon began his college career at Tri-State College (now Trine University) during the 1941–42 season before going on to play at Valparaiso University during the 1940s, gaining fame for his ability to defend top-ranked player George Mikan of DePaul University.
