Visitors who come to Lake Maria State Park will enjoy one of the few remaining stands of the "Big Woods," a maple, oak and basswood forest that once covered part of southern Minnesota. Lake Maria State Park has six miles of horse trails that wind through the remnants of the Big Woods forest that used to cover much of Minnesota. Maria Lake Water grasses grow along the edge of the still and calm Maria Lake, located in the western part of the park, south of Lake Maria.

La Salle Lake State Recreation Area: Most of La Salle SRA is open to public hunting and trapping of protected species during open seasons. Hunting and trapping is not allowed in the vicinity of the campground and cabins.
Hunters may only possess and use nontoxic ammunition when participating in a special hunt or disease management hunt in a Minnesota State Park, on parks-mangaged lands or Scientific and Natural Area or in a regular hunt in a Scientific and Natural Area.
