Simply Red ended their professional relationship with their label, East West Records in April 2000 (years later, in 2014, Mick Hucknall clarified in an interview that this was his and the band's decision, and contrary to media reports back then, Simply Red weren't actually dropped).
The following year the band released "Holding Back the Years", which reached number one in Ireland and the US and number two in the UK. Their second album, Men and Women was released in 1987. Third album A New Flame was released in 1989, containing "If You Don't Know Me by Now", which became their second US number one hit.

Hucknall, born at Saint Mary's Hospital, Manchester, on 8 June 1960, [4] [5] [6] was an only child. His mother abandoned the family when he was three; the upheaval caused by this event inspired him to write "Holding Back the Years", which would become one of Simply Red's biggest and best-known hits.
According to MTV he joined Simply Red earlier in 1981. [1] They had a No.2 UK / No.1 US hit in 1986 with "Holding Back The Years". Kellett left the band in 1991. [2] [1] In 1994, Kellett formed Olive with Robin Taylor-Firth, also of Nightmares on Wax. Olive had a No.1 UK hit in May 1997 with "You're Not Alone" before going on hiatus in 2001.
Song Book 1985–2010 is a four-disc box set by British soul group Simply Red. It peaked at number 41 in the United Kingdom and was certified Gold for sales of 100,000. [ 1 ] It also peaked at number 6 in New Zealand and 16 in Australia in 2015.
