The Wendat emerged as a confederacy of five nations in the St. Lawrence River Valley, especially in Southern Ontario, [ 1 ] including the north shore of Lake Ontario .

In 1867 the Wyandotte tribe was removed to this area. In 1869 the Quakers (Society of Friends) established a mission in Wyandotte. The Wyandotte Tribal Council donated land for the Quakers to establish a boarding school for Seneca, Shawnee and Wyandotte children. Construction of the school began in 1871 and classes began in 1872.
Armourdale was platted in 1880, and incorporated as a city in 1882. Its name came from the Armour meatpacking plant in the area. Richard Zane Smith (born 1955) is an American sculptor who grew up in St. Louis Missouri and learned the art of pottery at the Kansas City Art institute. Smith's works draw from Wyandotte as well as Pueblo traditions, incorporating coils and layers within the clay.
