LaVell Edwards (1930–2016) was the head coach at BYU for 29 seasons, preceded by ten years as an assistant. He announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2000 season; the stadium was officially renamed in his honor immediately before his last home game as head coach.
SMI was founded earlier that year by two BYU seniors (Jake Luekenga and Kevin Smith) who believed there was a need for a more specialized service than UTA provided. (While the UTA passes offered access throughout the UTA service area, many of the students used it almost exclusively to travel to and from BYU campus.)
In April 2012, BYU announced renovations to the Marriott Center. The lower bench seating on the north side was replaced with prime chair seating. A new sound system was installed, and the men's and women's locker rooms were renovated. The changes in the lower seating lowered the Marriott Center’s capacity from 22,700 to 20,951. [5]
In autumn 2005, BYU announced plans to raise money for a new alumni center named for Hinckley, the fifteenth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 2006, BYU's existing alumni building, the Alumni House, was demolished 44 years and one day after it was dedicated.
On September 15, 2012, BYU Salt Lake Center held their first tailgate party for the BYU vs. Utah rivalry game. Over three hundred people watched the game on an 18-foot blow up screen and ate hotdogs, BYU brownies, and washed them down with free soda provided by BYU Salt Lake. LDS Business College provided hotdogs and chips to the first 200 people.
BYU's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the BYU Cougars. All sports teams compete in the Big 12 Conference except for men's volleyball which is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. BYU's sports teams have won a total of 12 NCAA championships and 26 non-NCAA championships.
