An earlier Stamford Town Hall had been constructed in 1871 and destroyed in a fire in 1904. [8] To replace it, the City of Stamford (which then had about 19,000 inhabitants) commissioned a new town hall, designed by architects Edgar Josselyn and Nathan Mellen.
